Ecuador, 2019

Once again I have returned to Ecuador for ten days of photographing birds. National Geographic has listed Mindo, Ecuador as one of ten best places to see birds in the entire world. With the help of Efrain Toapanta,a terrific bird guide, here are just some of my photographs.

Buff-tailed Sicklebill Hummingbird ( and yes this is a hummer!!)

This Buff-tailed Hummingbird flew into someones room. I was lucky to be there just before they released him to get a quick photo.

South Dakota.2018

We were asked many times ‘why South Dakota?” It seemed like no one has been there, and neither have Alan and I. So that was the reason we took a trip to SD, to go exploring and discover what this state was all about. And what a discovery we had. The beauty of SD was outstanding. The landscape was endless beauty. I hope I could convey the beauty with some of my photos. You need to go there yourselves and discover SD

Newfoundland Canada,2018

Another returned trip to NL, spending almost two weeks, exploring new areas and coming back to some favorite places of ours. What we didn’t think about was the weather. A lot of fog, strong winds and cold. But a few times we did see the sun peek out. The weather kept us on our toes. Always be prepared.

Love this part of northern eastern Canada, everyone is so friendly.Always willing to stop and chat. And the wide open spaces on this island of this rock with a population of half a million people. Happy to be back to my home country once again, and to explore this beautiful Newfoundland.

Tanzania Africa 2018

Back to Africa with my photography group led by Mark Comon from Torrance, Ca.  It was a delight to rejoin Mark for my fifth trip to Africa, focusing on wildlife photography. Going to Tanzania was a brand new experience  for me. To be exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, visiting different family tribes like the Maasi, the Hadazbe people and a Datoga village besides  all the incredible wildlife. Was an amazing journey. Here are some of the highlights of what I saw thru my lens.

Within the Ngorongoro Crater, there are many Maasai villages. These two warriors of the Maasi tribe were tending their cattle/goats.

Borneo 2017

I'm asked often,"where is Borneo?" Take a 20 or so hours of plane flight, pass the Philippines,  turn south/west and there it is. Unique wildlife including orangutans, pygmy elephants and cloud leopards. Borneo is the third largest island in the world. It has a history of headhunters and the worlds most species-rich equatorial rainforests. And I got to spend 13 days with Wilderness Travels with Karen Bitts and Dean Javis, worlds best guides. A fabulous trip, not to be forgotten.

This lion was mating with a female, when we came upon them in our jeep. Mating is a two to three day affair, with multiple mating every 10 to 15 minutes. No food or water during this time. Mating when it does occur, last just seconds.  We observed three matings, and these lions were unaffected that we were so close in the jeep. They just ignored us, and did what nature told them to.

When mating is over, the female rolled on her back with her legs in the air.  Apparently this is done to increase conception.   She is also the one that decides when it's time to mate.   She  approaches the male, and some signal is sent, and the male is again instanly ready to mate once again.   This pair will stay together for several days and kept repeating the mating.

Birds from Ecuador

I have discovered Ecuador for the many species of hummingbirds and incredible bird life. The colors, size, and shapes range all over the spectrum. With help of bird guides, it makes it much easier to find some of these birds. I came looking for the Cock-of-the Rock bird and finally got to photograph a few of them, all with the help of guides. I plan to return soon.

Butterflies, Moths, & Caterpillars

In countries such as Ecuador, Panama, and Costa Rica, I have discovered Butterfly farms; where you can go into a large enclosed area and photograph butterflies. They are beautiful places with plants and flowers where the butterfly flies free. The LA Museum also has these enclosures  often with different butterflies you wouldn't normally see in our area.

The Beauty of Bugs

I've been "a girl" most of my life when it came to bugs!! Couldn't stand them. Jumped, tried to kill them, and yes, some screaming was involved! But that all ended when I started photographing insects, while using a macro lens, and discovered their unique beauty. Now I never pass up a chance to photograph them. If you live near me, you might see me in the early AM, bent over plants, weeds, and flowers; looking for any bugs. I've learned that bugs aren't very active in early AM due to dampness, which causes them to not be able to fly very well.  So this early morning time is  when I go looking for my next "client" to photograph. Please enjoy the beauty of nature as I have discovered.

At times I actually take my eyes away from birds and soak up the beauty right in front of me. A friend told me I should put my camera down every now and then, and just "look". That was the best advice. Bruce, I still follow what you told me. Thank you.

Alaska, 2011

Number one on my bucket list was to photograph grizzlies up close and personal.  This was a trip of a life time to Katmine, Alaska; a very remote area. With my first sighting of a bear, it was walking beside a stream, getting closer and closer to me. My first thought was "oh Sh--". I put down my 300mm lens, but my guide whispered to me "keep shooting". So I did, and this is the shot (photo on the left) as he walked very close by me. He looked at me for one brief second, dripping water from his mouth, and kept on walking. This moment will always be "THE MOMENT" I will never forget. Please enjoy my first bear encounter. I treasure this photo.

I have to admit, I lost count of how many grizzle's we saw. We were always on land, walking in their turf. They just ignored us.

African Birds

When you go to Africa; you see lions, elephants, leopards, and huge hippos. I love seeing these amazing animals. But the birdlife in Africa is also amazing. Our leader Mark Comon, nicknamed me "bird brain", for our jeep soon learned to stop for any and all birds. Here are some of them.

Hanging out with dogs!

I've always had a great love of dogs, but my lifestyle kept me from having one. So instead I photograph dogs. In Huntington Beach, Ca, we have a dog beach where I photograph them at their best and most playful. I always carry dog treats when I'm walking in Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA.

This is one of my favorite dog photos. He were sitting at Starbucks in Balboa Is, Newport Beach, another great place of dogs hanging out while their "folks" drink their cappuccino.

Theodore, Balboa Island. I met Theodore when he was just weeks old. His dad wanted coffee at Starbucks, but couldn't bring in his dog. He could tell I was able and very willing to hold this little  puppy while he went inside. As far as I was concerned I bonded with Theodore right then. He and his dad still go to Starbucks in Balboa Island every Saturday when we go walking. Theodore, who is now three years old, knows I have a treat for him. He runs up to me in a big rush, pushing his front paw out so I can shake hands and then gets his reward. I love this dog.

Odd and Ends of Mother Nature

Sometimes you have to look to see some of natures hidden  beauty. An example  of  that I found thru my macro lens are weeds.  They have their own special look. This  section isn't just about weeds, but things that caught my eye thru my lens. Odds and ends that might have been over looked. Take a peek.

Dead weeds have a certain beauty.
