A mass of these little butterflies, seems to be feeding off the minerals or salts on the ground.

As you can see, the bird life in Ecuador is amazing. But along the way met a lot of non-speaking English Ecuadorians, and always super friendly and getting hugs. These two guys caught me photographing them, and within minutes we were all laughing. This is just a few reasons why I love Ecuador and plan on returning.

This is Bob, found in Central Park. Someone dumped him there. Alas Bob disappeared pretty quick, most likely a coyote.He is or was a beautiful  rooster.

Finally after many overcast days and rain in the Badlands, saw my one and only sunset.

Our first trip (above photos) was interrupted and we came home early. Two weeks later we were back in South Dakota to resume our trip. Our first stop was this amazing Devils Tower in Wyoming,standing 867 feet from summit to base.Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt

Found my herd of wild donkeys again,only they are very tame and lovable.

Chief Crazy Horse, a Lakota warrior chief. Located in the Black Hills in South Dakota

Korczak Ziolkowshi started Crazy Horse in 1948,and is projected to be completed in about fifty more years. The face is the only thing completed. He will be sitting on a horse when finished. Will be 641 ft long and 563 ft high. ( if you look closely you can see a worker in a orange jacket on the top level.Gives perspective how large it is)

I fell in love with the beauty of South Dakota, the wide open spaces, and few people or traffic. But my heart really was lost on this wild donkey as he put his head near my body so I could scratch him.( the black dots behind me are buffalo) Our second trip back to SD was all sunshine, no rain but cold, in low 30’s.Already there are discussions on returning back to SD. next year.

St Bride’s, Newfoundland. A tiny town , few services, but enough to get you by for a few days. Three days here to visit the Northern Gannets in Cape St Mary’s.

From a distance of the cliffs of Cape St. Mary’s, you can see all the white dots of 24,000 Northern Gannets

Bird Rock, home to over 24,000 Northern Gannets. They arrive here to mate and nest on these 200 ft cliffs and sea stacks.

You can hear the sounds a long distance away from so many Northern Gannets.It’s an amazing site.This region is a birder’s ( and this photographer) Paradise.

Northern Gannet. They nest in massive colonies on rocky cliffs. Food here is abundant, as they plunge into the cold Atlantic waters from these cliffs.

A pair of gannets greet each other with the touching of their bills, it’s also a mating function.

Cape St Mary is also home to thousands of Black-legged Kittiwakes nesting on high narrow ledges. Mom with her two chicks.

A long dive down for dinner, but these Gannets are ocean going large birds.

A big storm the day before, left everyone wet and muddy on these cliffs. This chick should be white, but he is covered with mud and demanding food.

Trinity,NL, one of my very favorite places to photograph, Time seems to have stood still for this quaint fishing village. It has preserved many of its 19th -century buildings. The colors of all their lovely old homes and buildings are colors of a rainbow.We stayed four days.

Lupine grows everywhere in NL. It’s all growing wild, and some consider it a weed. Once it starts growing, they say they can’t get rid of it and takes over their gardens.

Razorbill a stocky-billed bird. He is the closest relative of the extinct Great Auk.

Yes he was that close to me, just a few feet away. The puffins here aren’t afraid of people.

If you look closely on this green cliff area, those white dots are all Atlantic Puffins.

I put this photo in to show you how these puffins were not scare of us. They actually did some mating while they had all these people quietly looking on.

 Root cellars keep food from freezing during the winter and keep food cool during the summer to prevent spoilage. Typically, a variety of vegetables are placed in the root cellar in the autumn, after harvesting.Saw a lot of cellars, most not used, but still some people still put their crops in their cellars

St Johns’s and the Harbor,Newfoundland. Last two days before heading home.

St John’s,NL, Signal Hill, Battery Road. On the cliffs overlooking the harbor.

Battery Road is suspended above the city. it has the best location and views perched on the cliffs above St John’s Harbor. A very narrow street goes in-between these closely knit homes.

Cape Spear Lighthouse was built a few miles from St John’s. Built in 1834.

As our first day in NL, and our last day and in-between, saw a lot of fog. Here is the fog rolling in at the Cape Spear’s Lighthouse.

We walked all over St John’s exploring our last day, Here is what my smart phone said I did. Walked 5.2 miles, 14,190 steps,39 floors!! These steps up to Cape Spear Lighthouse was one part.

St John’s row houses are an amazing array of colors. Block after block, every color you can imagine.

Ok, of course it’s raining for these photos AND I can’t remove ALL the wires. St John is one huge wire,EVERYWHERE. So bare with me. Wires, rain, that was my day.

A visit to the Hadazbe village. A primitive tribe of about 30. There are about only 1000 of the Hadazbe's left.They live in grass type huts and are hunters/gathers.

A visit to a Ngorongoro Crater Maasai tribe. The chief gave us a nice welcoming. And invited us to lunch.

We even were given a chance to milk one of their cows into a narrow gourd. We didn’t do to well!

A slaughtered goat was our lunch over an open fire.

The liver of the goat is the most valued of the entire animal and usually the chief eats it. But this day, we were invited to take a piece of it, as he walked around and gave us each a slice.

Nothing is wasted from the goat. This “soup” consisted of the heart, lungs, stomach and intestines.

The soup was than sort of pulverize with a stick with a stone at the end. And than served to us in four community cups. We each took a sip.

Leeches!! They live in the rainforest and appear abundant! We were given leech socks and did wear them.  We also checked ourselves for leeches frequently. They look and are the size of inch worms. 

Leeches have proven not to have any viruses or bacteria that can harm humans. They are attached to virbations  and carbon dioxide  you produce. We observed them under leafs and when we got just a foot or two close to them, they would appear to get excited and start swaying back and forth.

Western Tarsier Monkey. They are small nocturnal,carnivorous, primitive primates. Their heads can rotate 180 degrees. We were very lucky to see this tiny monkey in the dark. With all the flashlights on him, I was able to get  a few shots.

Mataking Island, Celebes Sea. Green Sea Turtles. The turtles eggs are gather and hatched in a safe environment. When they do hatch , they are released into the sea within 24 hours. We were lucky to see about 200 Green Sea Turtles head into the Celebes Sea.

This lion was mating with a female, when we came upon them in our jeep. Mating is a two to three day affair, with multiple mating every 10 to 15 minutes. No food or water during this time. Mating when it does occur, last just seconds.  We observed three matings, and these lions were unaffected that we were so close in the jeep. They just ignored us, and did what nature told them to.

 When mating is over, the female rolled on her back with her legs in the air.  Apparently this is done to increase conception.   She is also the one that decides when it's time to mate.   She  approaches the male, and some signal is sent, and the male is again instanly ready to mate once again.   This pair will stay together for several days and kept repeating the mating.

Andean Cock-of-the rock.(m) I came back to Ecuador a second time just to photograph this bird. The first trip I had 5 seconds to get a shot, and MISSED.  The second trip in 2016 was a complete success. Saw about five of them and they weren't flying around, just gather at "lek" sites where they call and display for females.

The beauty of Mother Nature is always right in front of you,, you just need to look.

I have to admit, I lost count of how many grizzle's we saw. We were always on land, walking in their turf. They just ignored us.

We didn't see this bear sleeping behind a log until we were almost on him. Even our guide missed him, and when the bear raised his big head, we quietly but slowly backed up. Bear continued his sleep!

 This was the only shot I got of a bear catching his salmon.

The beauty here was outstanding. We were living on a large old crab boat that was moored in an inlet. During our stay, two or three times a day, we got on this little rubber raft and came on land and walked literally among bears.

We came upon this mom and her cub. We were very quiet and stood and watched this animal that could kill us with one paw. But instead, the cub was playing with mom, crawling all over her. This moment caused me to tear up, watching this animal, loving and playing with her baby. She was so gentle with her cub.

This photo is here because I wanted to show you how close we were. Our guide, Buck Wilde, was truly a bear whisperer if such a thing exsists. He was calm and relaxed, so we all felt that way. This bear just crossed our path and kept on walking. All the bears were more interested in catching salmon than paying attention to us.

Next, in the same area of the grizzle's, wolf's were nearby. This one just watched us from afar.

But this female wolf, approached the six of us. We were all sitting on the grass, not talking. Buck Wilde, our guide, was making some kind of wolf noises, and this female approached us. She was only focusing on Buck.

She got very close.

In the left corner of this frame is our friend, Leslie. She's taking the wolf's photo, but the wolf was looking right thru our circle and watching Buck. It's like she really didn't care about any of us, only Buck.

She circled around us to where Buck was on his knees. All of us were very quiet and not moving.

Buck and the wolf came eye to eye.

You can see the wolf is nervous, hair on the nape is standing up, but she had more curiosity than fear.

She smelled Buck's boots. No one moved. It was truly so exciting  being so close to this incredible wild animal. BUT still shooting away.

She circled us twice. This is my hubby, Alan, waiting to get more photos. As you can see, this was THE most exciting trip of my whole life. Being this close to grizzlie's and wolves. Truly amazing.

Wattled Crane. This crane is listed as threatened. I felt very lucky to see this bird and was able to get a photo of two of them.

Pintailed Whydah (m). If you check my Birds of Huntington Beach, you will also see this bird listed here in our local parks. Africa is their home, and how they managed to end up in California is anyone's guess.

Pintailed Whydah. A mating was going on with this male and female. The male bird flies horizontal in front of the female. In this case the female flew away.

Yellow-billed Oxpecker. They are feeding off of ticks and other insects on mammals. 

Marabou Stork. Usually seen along with vultures scavenging at a kill.

Marabou Stork. This guy was hanging around the restaurant area of our camp looking for handouts.  He was pretty tame, and wasn't scared of anyone.  But been a big stork with a huge bill, you gave him leeway.

Theodore, Balboa Island. I met Theodore when he was just weeks old. His dad wanted coffee at Starbucks, but couldn't bring in his dog. He could tell I was able and very willing to hold this little  puppy while he went inside. As far as I was concerned I bonded with Theodore right then. He and his dad still go to Starbucks in Balboa Island every Saturday when we go walking. Theodore, who is now three years old, knows I have a treat for him. He runs up to me in a big rush, pushing his front paw out so I can shake hands and then gets his reward. I love this dog.

These two dogs were been trained to be service dogs. Avalon, Catalina. 

This is my great grand dog, Guinness. I got to walk him in Balboa Island one time when he was visiting, so much fun. Guinness lives on an Air Force base with his mom in New Mexico.

After a rain, I look for raindrops.
